I enjoyed a very pleasant walk around this nature reserve today. It was lovely and quiet and i didnt see anyone else here. Another place i probably would not have visited if it wasnt for geocaching so thanks for bringing me here. All the caches were found easily enough and were in good condition. I wasnt in a hurry so we spent 1.5 hours walking around which my dogs enjoyed. When i got back to the car it started spitting and by the time i left it was raining very heavily and didnt stop all day so i timed it perfectly. Have a fave point. Tftc

Today was the day I was expected from my first day on New Zealand. The first time I saw Mount Cook, highest point of my dream country. From Twizel we have a drive with some photo stops and than make some hikes. First was around Tasman glacer and second one was Hooker Valley track. Both of this was awesome and show me how bad is the climate crise. Thanks for open my eyes.

Thanks for this earthcache.

I wasn’t able to solve the original version of Crowlympics and even with the assistance of Krähelympiade it still took several sessions of deep thought to get the green light.
On this visit to the GZ I crossed the fence and after checking several hosts found the cache deep in it's hidey hole. After brushing off the debris I was greeted by a blank log sheet in pristine condition. I'm very relieved to have finally solved and found this mystery cache.
This was a cache resuscitation after 6½ years!

I do not understand this at all. I have solved coordinates for this one. They are on the way to Ms Kitty. But how? I'm fairly sure I haven't visited the cemetery. And if I had, surely I would have found the cache (and had very different numbers). I have no write note log, just a personal note that simply says "multi". It's a conundrum.

The coords that I did have were by a path but, when I got there, they were a bit too far off the path, no sign of a particularly big tree and I wasn't convinced that there was a cemetery nearby either.

After a brief hunt, I called it a day and moved on. But as luck would have it, I was passing the cemetery anyway. I didn't try finding the numbers but decided to go straight for a search for the hint item. Which I nearly missed, yeah, yeah, whatever. Fortunately, the cache itself was nice and easily spotted!

Nope, not a clue how this one was solved. Another one that must have been a long time ago. I really should solve a few more rally rounds, I haven't looked at any for, well, probably years and now some of the ones I did solve have been archived and renewed!

I didn't spot this one to start with. Two possible hosts yielded nothing and I feared that the lightning bolt that had taken out the tree might have done the same to the cache. Then I spotted another couple of potential hosts. Made my way over, and immediately spotted a likely hidey-hole.

M
...RR112GL1BBXYWKRR112 - ?s about ?sFound itFast Running Monster
I ended up here by accident really. I had planned to mooch around Colchester town centre but for about the first time ever, I hadn't actually checked for Greater Anglia service disruptions. Was nudged to do so by Dad Monster before I came out and...literally the only disruption is replacement buses between Ipswich and Colchester. Aargh.

Quick rethink. Need lots of caches, not too much mud, not overly far. Decided on Maldon. But as I was en route, I wondered if there was much around Tiptree and decided to cut short my journey and mooch around the Tiptree/Tolleshunt area.

First proper cache of a little walk here. I must have solved the puzzle absolutely ages ago. Not entirely sure how - my notes just say that the puzzle was solved quickly and then I spent months on the conversion and hammered the checker!

As to the find, I had a bit of a poke around with no luck and not feeling enthusiastic about any of the possible hosts. Decided to check out a few sneaky spots and soon hit paydirt!

Nice little walk around Tiptree, picking up information on the way. I hadn't realised there was a bonus as the icon was hiding under the lab cache icon but fortunately saw the coords come up in the app. A bit more of a walk to the final just when I thought I had finished. No luck at first but then I applied cacher mind and thought about where it ought to be and had my hands on it immediately.

My second visit to look for this one. The first was during the summer months and the area was very overgrown. I should have paid more attention to the hint back then! Today I was determined to find it. Realised where it was likely to be having found other caches hidden in a similar way and so got myself into a position to see whether I was right. Glad there was no one else around to to see me.

Retrieved without too much trouble but getting back to terra firma was more of a struggle. Thanks for the puzzle and the hide, Mr Crow.

Resus. 1985 days since its last find but 100 or so short of my best ever resus. I had looked at the puzzle a few times but did not get very far. knowing I was coming this way I tried again. Solving the first anagram helped me obtain a partial solution but not the cocordinates. The 'light bulb' moment finally arrived when I spotted something and the checker said yes. The final anagram was an easy solve but because I approached from the wrong path I liked the ICT as the host. Once I did spot the correct host I dug deep and retrieved a near perfect container. Unfortunately when i changed to walk here I failed to pick up my pen so I took a photo as proof.

I had a good idea what was going to be required here. Stage 1 was a struggle to progress, then Stage 2 wouldn't come clean (I was repeatedly missing). Stage 3 was what I first felt it must be, something I have used in the day job several years ago.
I found a tool which prevented a manual extraction, though I still had to do it in ten steps.

Gz had many possible hosts. I began to think I may have conjectured this just as easily. Then, thinking where would it be least likely to be dicovered accidently, wandered over and there it was.

SL 1/2/24 and wondered if in 10 years time I be still signing caches.

Log about this cache:
A very nice walk, and a terror wind.

General log:
After years of planning and the canceling of trip due to the corona crisis, the time had finally come:
"more than 5 weeks in New Zealand".
And how beautiful it was!

Visited both the north and south islands, many tourist attractions have a cache nearby so I could do some as well.
Lots of virtuals and earth caches too and traditionals. But also done a few multi caches here and there also even a mystery and wherigo cache.

The trip to New Zealand was great and we saw a lot of nice places. The country has so many different types of landscapes. And the nice thing was that it is winter in the Netherlands but summer in New Zealand :-)
Too bad it takes so long to fly and that the flight is so expensive otherwise i can go here next year again.

Now you can enjoy it, logging the caches is also part of it. I will try to email the answers for the earthcaches and virtual caches to the relevant co`s as soon as possible. But first log all caches and upload the photos .

Here in NZ on a 28-day holiday and of course had to visit the cache I had hidden 8 years ago. I had prepared a new triple-potted container to freshen the cache. Not strictly necessary because my NZ maintainer (drawp) had done an excellent job for me.
Very windy on the Hooker Valley today as drawp (and Mrs drawp) and Kitty!! accompanied me on the walk from the event we had organised today in Mt Cook Village.

It didn't take too long to find, but the spoiler pic does look a bit dated. Waypoint averaged the co-ordinates which are within 10ft of perfect. I have changed the hint to better describe the cache location.

Finally, thanks to drawp who we met in Oamaru for the first time yesterday and for his hospitality and kindness over the last two days and previous eight years.

4-week family trip through NZ - Find #145!

This was the only difficult find on our hike along Hooker Valley Track. My son ChrisAngel99 and I searched around 10 minutes, climbing above and around the rocks, trying the somehow match the hint and spoiler photo with reality. When we finally identified the location, we saw that the bushes have grown considerably, making the rock in the spoiler much less prominent in reality . Of course, once we were sure of the location, the very well hidden cache (no way to see it among the bushes without the spoiler) was easy to find .

We (cache-amount and roger.yvonne) spent some time in this area in 2017 to find quite a few Mr Crow puzzles. Becasue we had unfinished business (more puzzles solved than caches foud) we took the time to solve a few more. This time also some Gillywig, Stratoman and Grinning_Buddha puzzles.
Armed with roughly 200 solved mysteries we planned another trip to do some field work. We arrived early on Friday and finished on Sunday logging our last cache of the trip while the sun was already down. After a dinner in Colchester we headed for the ferry to be back at work by Monday morning.

I have to say that most of the puzzles were solved by Roger, but we work as a team.
Friday was a Crow day, Saturday mostly Gillywigs and Sunday a majority of Stratoman and a few Grinning_Buddhas. Weather was nice on Friday and Saturday but Sunday it was raining most of the time. We managed to find ca. 30 caches on Friday, some 30 on Saturday and 58 or so on Sunday. 16 DNFs. No 200 obviously, but that was to be expected. So the business is still not finished.

I want to thank the cache owners for the most enjoybale puzzles and mostly well maintained caches (some had a latest log of a few years old!). General log:
About half a year ago Rob (Cache Amount) proposed to solve a number of (new) riddles of Mr. Crow. In 2017 we made a trip to Essex because together we solved a considerable amount of riddles of this CO then. But after we returned from our trip in 2017 I noticed that a number of interesting puzzles of other CO 's had been placed in about the same area as well. So I decided to solve some of them during the past few years. After Rob 's proposal I suggested to add these caches to the pile of solved riddles of Mr. Crow for another trip to Essex and I challenged him to solve some more of the remaining ones.
In February this year we had solved about 200 riddles of four different CO 's althogether and we decided to plan another trip to Essex in order to find the corresponding caches. This event ;) took place between between March 8 and 11.
In general the weather was quite good (only on Sunday it was a bit rainy) and we had a lot of fun together despite the heavy rain during the winter that had made most of the footpaths quite muddy.

Individual log:
Solved by Cache Amount some time ago.
Place looked familiar to us (we met the CO here several years ago).

Where we did not put our full cache name on the log we logged with CARO (abbrev. of cache-amount and roger.yvonne) to save time, log space and try to catch a bit less rain

Where we did not put our full cache name on the log we logged with CARO (abbrev. of cache-amount and roger.yvonne) to save time, log space and try to catch a bit less rain

Individual log:
This one was solved long ago, but not visited 7 years ago. So it was part of our unfinished business. Today we did find it.

Nice riddle solved by Rob (Cache Amount) a long time ago.

Nice riddle. After having read several logs I had an idea what it was all about.
Several minutes later my assumptions turned out to be correct.

Mr. Crow, many thanks for this riddle and for maintaining the cache.

Kind regards from Holland,
Roger.yvonne

We (cache-amount and roger.yvonne) spent some time in this area in 2017 to find quite a few Mr Crow puzzles. Because we had unfinished business (more puzzles solved than caches foud) we took the time to solve a few more.

Where we did not put our full cache name on the log we logged with CARO (abbrev. of cache-amount and roger.yvonne) to save time, log space and try to catch a bit less rain

Individual log:
Solved long ago. Typical Crow...

Its been a long while since we undertook any 'proper geocaching' especially so close to home. We remember the original set fondly, so today we embarked on a return adventure. An wet muddy, soggy adventure it was indeed. Jess was delighted as she could jump in copious amounts of puddles whilst we strolled the heath. Evie wasn't so enamoured but she came with us so we were thankful for. that After a long walk with some backwards and forwards zigzagging we managed to solve the our first one of the four. GZ looked promising and Jen was pleased with a relatively quick find considering the leaf cover and amount of hidey holes. The cache was lovely and dry, so signed and replaced nicely. We have however decided to call it a day, having found most of what we needed to, we thought we would retreat and solve the others over a cuppa and a doughnut and make a return journey soon with Jess in tow as its a nice walking route for us. I am spending one week in Witham visiting family this Easter. Today I went for a walk on the eastern side of A12. Nice paths and the roads were quite easy to walk along (compared to some others roads I have walked along earlier). The sun was shining and the weather very nice. Three caches found, one DNF and one challenge I'm not qualified for yet.

The task was solved a long time ago. Quite easy (compared to the other mysteries in this area), I will say.

This was my first stop. I did not manage to solve the placement hint anagram. I looked here and there for a while. Then I crossed the streak and found it imitatively. The cache was in good shape, but the outer fabric is not any good anymore.

I had decided that we needed a geocaching walk over the Easter weekend so we traipsed out to Chigborough to pick up the long-sought after multis here. They've been on my to-do list for a decade! Imagine my panic then, when we get to the car park and the info board is missing!

A panicked PAF to the CO ensued but I didn't get any info. However, in the meantime, I made a search of the logs to see if I could request info from other sources. Only then did I notice the information I needed hidden away...
A quick calculation and coords for all three caches were in the GPSr.

FTF
A subtle twist (or rather two) of the previous MO here. Fortunately something in the maths caught my attention - "why this not that?" which suggested a transformation, doubly confirmed by the title. The first two eggsuations were familiar territory, but the third confused me for a while and required a different approach, because it was not merely rotten but truly degenerate [].

GZ was fairly straightforward, though the approach was extremely muddy.

I had found the original and had the coords but I had no notes of the solve that I could find. In the area looking for a few other RRs so came for a speculative look.
The hint: cower down? hide!? not helping. I had a good search of the obvious until something pricked my subconcious and the hint maybe fitted.
Still no joy and about to leave when I thought try there. (Not the mo I expect from the co.) I still didn't see it, then for some unknown reason I looked closer and thought thats odd.
Wow! Can't believe the hide is the reason for the D rating. ????

???????????? FTF ????????????
With notes of its predecessor in hand, I didn't have too much trouble with this version. The hardest part was second-guessing the CO's intentions as a crossword compiler. I think he should publish (anonymously, of course) some of the incorrect guesses, for the amusement of other solvers ????. Anyway, given the crossword solutions and the code I used last time, it didn't take long to get a set of very plausible coordinates. Unfortunately the checker disagreed. However, the coords were plotting so close to an obvious potential host that I thought it was worth venturing out to see if I was right. I was, and discovered a nice clean log sheet as my reward.

An ingenious puzzle, which would have taken a rally driver's determination (more than I have) to solve by following EVie's progress around the map. Then I noticed that there was a labour-saving shortcut... It meant that the solution was ambiguous, but there were only a few plausible answers. Unfortunately, thanks to rounding errors the checker was not having any of them, so this cache went on the to-do pile for quite a while. Today I was in the vicinity to find another cache so it seemed worth having a speculative search at the nearest potential GZ. It was raining gently, and the wet vegetation and the slightly hazy diffuse daylight made everything stand out very clearly, compared to the raking oblique sunlight there would have been at the same time on a sunny day. As a result, to my surprise I spotted the relevant barkoflage within a few minutes of starting the search.

TFTC and a favourite for exercising my mapping skills.
...RR296GL1BTFYBHRR296 - ChatGPT: Clever CrowsFound itgrinning_buddha
The moral of this exercise is clearly that crows are more intelligent than ChatGPT.

Yes, ChatGPT is very good at putting convincing sequences of words into an order that appears to make sense, and crows don't have a lot to say to us, but nearly everything else in that article can be done better by crows than large language methods. Anyway, the article was verbose enough to contain far more text than the unicity distance of English, so it decrypted quite easily and solving the second stage wasn't too laborious.

At GZ I managed to identify the correct host without problems and extracted a pot from a concealment that was probably not crow-proof, so I replaced it very firmly.

Like alanwito I have the scars, both mental and physical but not from the previous visit but today's.
I mistakenly thought if I get near it would be easy to spot. A schoolboy error to assume I could get anywhere near.
I wandered about taking paths of least resistance but it soon became a futile exercise. I headed North in an attempt to get a bearing and must have been spotted from afar by a local employee. Minutes later he turned up in his truck, Not too happy I was here, he asked what I was doing. After a short while he said I should go back to the way I came and warned me of hornets.
Taking his advice I tried my best but got bogged down. On hands and knees heading for where I though I need to go, two men and a dog appeared and one called out. I made it to them and they 'escorted' me out.
They were pleasant enough but insisted that this was somewhere noone should be. I enquired about the bridleway but they insited that didn't exist anymore, despite the sign.
Not somewhere I think I'll back back to soon, if ever.
Not to worry. Shame I didn't stumble upon it on my attempt to exit. You can't find them all.????

Unlike grinning buddha I failed spectacularly to sense the sense of the title. Even then I didn't see the 'familiar terriory' at first.
That over the next part looked horrendous even for a 'mathematician'. A technique I did have in my once day job armoury, gave me an extremely encouraging pair of answers. Given that I had solved the original it wasn't two many steps to satisfying the checker.
I parked exactly where I had the other day and wandered down. 'the approach was extremely muddy' was by no means an eggsaggeration.

After collecting the relevant coords we started on our stroll down unknown footpaths to us (however our memory is going so we could have been down here years ago lol)

The stroll to GZ was quite memorable as Jess thought it was excellent with a dead rat that she almost managed to grab, muddy puddles and horses for her to be amazed by!

We enjoyed the peace and quiet and the beautiful views across to the estuary.

Once upon a time I had a list of things to try when contemplating a puzzle cache. On this occasion I failed to use it, and apart from discovering the built-in misdirection I got nowhere with the methods I did try. Only going back to first principles (in more ways than one) did I make any progress, but eventually a solution emerged.
Like Gillywig I had a distinct sense of deja vu when visiting GZ today. On my first approach I could see something promising, but it took a bit more work to view it from an angle where I could actually extract the log and add my details.

Solving wasn't too hard as I had notes from (1).
Finding was harder - see earlier DNF log. I understood the hint, but it was present in profusion and I was perhaps too much fixated on one location. Today, expanding the search radius by 15m or so to allow for GPS inaccuracy, something else consistent with the hint appeared and a little investigation revealed what I had missed first time around.

...RR197GL1BWGV4FRR197 - Anagram Teacher (2)Found itgrinning_buddha
Like its predecessor, not a puzzle I can say I enjoyed solving. It's dispiriting when on an early attempt you get to 98 with time in hand, and then mistype answer 99. The reduced choice of words made it slightly easier, but I still had to look up one or two of them, and Groundspeak's idea of "country" is a little bit, er, flexible. (For example, last time I visited them, Sark was part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, and Guadeloupe was a French département et région d'outre-mer with food to match. ) Still, that's a minor problem compared with remembering how to spell some of the more obscure ones, and with the aid of a high-quality gaming keyboard I eventually managed to type 100 names correctly.

Today was catching-up day for assorted Tolleshunt caches. I had warm wind, blue sky, a sweet route to GZ and a more orthodox route back. GZ was a neat concealment but easily identified thanks to the hint.

...RR225GL1BWGZPXRR225 - Tolleshunt D'Arcy 30mph (2)Found itgrinning_buddha
In many ways a repeat of (1) covering some now-familiar territory. This was nearly a DNF because the host is badly overgrown with extremely scratchy brambles and I hadn't brought secateurs. Fortunately just as I was about to give up I tried a bit of sounding, and one corner produced a drum-like sound, no doubt due to the triple encapsulation of the log. A little digging and the log was in hand, though its outer container was by no means dry inside.

Technical note: My browser reported "page not found" on a couple of occasions (probably because I was simultaneously visiting the nearby AdLab, and the browser was timing out when not the foreground app) but it restarted from where it had left off without any problems.

One this hurdle was overcome the solve was pretty straightforward.
